Ross Mathews' Almost Role in 'Mean Girls'

Mindy Kaling

Actress, writer, producer, and author of humorous essays on Hollywood and life.

Ross Mathews, a prominent figure in television and a judge on 'RuPaul's Drag Race', recently disclosed an intriguing behind-the-scenes tidbit about the beloved film 'Mean Girls'. During an appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show', the 46-year-old personality revealed that he was approached to audition for the role of Damian in the 2004 teen comedy, a character now synonymous with the memorable line, "She doesn’t even go here!"

Mathews explained that the call for the audition came around 2002 or 2003, a time when he felt he might be too old for a high school student's part. However, he was informed that Tina Fey, the film's writer, had him in mind for the character. Despite this promising start, Mathews admitted his audition was far from stellar, ultimately resulting in Daniel Franzese being cast as Damian. He expressed no bitterness, acknowledging the film's iconic status and his unique, albeit unsuccessful, connection to its inception. The character of Damian, along with his friend Janice, plays a crucial role in Cady's integration into North Shore High School and her subsequent plot against the popular clique, leading to comedic chaos.

Mathews' story serves as a reminder that even in Hollywood, opportunities can arise in unexpected ways, and while not every endeavor leads to success, the experience itself can become a cherished memory. It highlights the often-unseen journey of creative projects and the many talents considered before a final cast is assembled. This revelation adds another layer to the rich tapestry of 'Mean Girls' lore, demonstrating the film's lasting impact and the continuous fascination it holds for its audience and those almost involved in its creation. It underscores the idea that passion and connection to a project can transcend the outcome of any single role, inspiring a positive outlook on every step of one's professional journey.
