Joy Behar Reveals the Challenging Backstage Atmosphere at 'The View'

Author and journalist whose work on culture, race, and history includes writing for Marvel's "Black Panther."

Joy Behar, a veteran co-host of the popular talk show “The View,” has recently offered an unfiltered glimpse into the often-complex interpersonal relationships that unfold behind the scenes. Her revelations suggest that the convivial atmosphere seen on screen doesn't always reflect the reality backstage, where interactions with her fellow panelists, including Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, and Alyssa Farah Griffin, can be unpredictable. Behar's candidness highlights the pressures and varying personal dynamics inherent in a high-profile, live television environment, where individual personalities and strong opinions frequently converge.

During an episode of “Behind the Table,” the show’s companion podcast, Behar addressed a question regarding workplace friendships, acknowledging that her sentiments toward her co-workers shift depending on the day. She remarked that some days are filled with camaraderie, while on others, her colleagues can get "on her last nerve." This fluctuation, she explained, is often more a reflection of her own mood than any persistent issues. Interestingly, she humorously attributed some of her more amiable days to seasonal allergies, quipping that being "a little tired" makes her "more lovable" because "hatred requires energy." This amusing insight underscores the human element behind the polished facade of television production.

The discussion also revisited past on-air tensions that have captured public attention. One notable incident involved a heated exchange with Alyssa Farah Griffin following the 2024 presidential election. Griffin, a Republican with ties to former President Donald Trump, directly challenged Behar during a broadcast, asserting, "We have Trump because you guys screwed this up!" Such moments highlight the show's dynamic nature and its panel's willingness to engage in robust political debate. Another significant conflict occurred in 2021 when Behar made a pointed comment to Meghan McCain upon her return from maternity leave, stating she hadn't missed her. McCain later described the emotional distress this caused, revealing she suffered a panic attack and felt disrespected, emphasizing the vulnerability women can experience when returning to work after childbirth.

Further exploring the nuances of their professional interactions, Behar also reflected on her unique rapport with producer Brian Teta. She noted their frequent "adversarial conversations," yet Teta found solace and safety in her office, describing it as a "cocoon" away from the show’s daily drama. He attributed this sense of security to the perception that Behar doesn't demand anything from him personally, despite his role requiring him to make requests of her. This dynamic illustrates how professional boundaries and personal comfort levels intertwine in a demanding work environment. These instances collectively paint a picture of a workplace where strong personalities, diverse viewpoints, and the demands of live television frequently lead to both genuine connection and occasional friction among its prominent figures.
