Stormgate's Multiplayer Faces Closure Due to AI Company Acquisition

Stormgate, the Real-Time Strategy game reminiscent of StarCraft, launched into early access in 2024 and achieved its 1.0 release a year later. However, its online multiplayer support is slated to cease by the end of April. This development stems from the acquisition of Hathora, the game's server provider, by an artificial intelligence company. While developer Frost Giant Studios intends to release a patch enabling offline play, the reinstatement of online functionality hinges on securing a new partnership for ongoing server operations.

In March, Hathora announced its acquisition by Fireworks AI, alongside the impending discontinuation of its game support services, including those for Stormgate, by May 5. Despite a proposed collaboration with GameFabric to facilitate a smooth transition, Stormgate appears not to be moving forward with this arrangement. One contributing factor to this decision might be the game's dwindling player engagement.

During its pre-release phase, Stormgate garnered significant enthusiasm from both critics and the RTS community. A Kickstarter campaign successfully raised nearly $2.8 million, supplementing the $35 million in private investment already secured by Frost Giant. Furthermore, a subsequent investment opportunity attracted an additional $1.2 million. However, the early access launch encountered difficulties, and the 1.0 release in 2025 did not significantly improve its trajectory. This could be partly attributed to the fact that several core features, such as the terrain editor and co-op mode, were still under development at the time of the 1.0 launch. User reviews on Steam are predominantly mixed, with less than half being positive, and the number of concurrent players has not surpassed double digits since December 2025, peaking at just 28 players in the past 24 hours. For a free-to-play title, such low engagement is unsustainable.

The cessation of online support, officially communicated via the Stormgate Discord, is a direct consequence of Hathora's acquisition. Frost Giant Studios has expressed a desire to restore online play in the future, but this endeavor is contingent on finding a new partner to manage server operations. Given Stormgate's current financial performance, securing such a partnership may prove challenging.

The only silver lining in this situation is the promised offline patch. While the absence of online multiplayer will undoubtedly impact a game where competitive play is a core component, Stormgate does feature a campaign and other single-player modes that will remain accessible. In the current landscape, the continued availability of these offline elements represents the best possible outcome for dedicated players.
