Leonard Cohen's Manager Exonerated in Estate Dispute

Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

Following a rigorous 10-day legal proceeding in probate court, Robert Kory, the manager of the esteemed Canadian artist Leonard Cohen, has been fully absolved of all accusations of financial impropriety.

The legal dispute arose after Cohen's passing in 2016 at the age of 82, when his children, Adam and Lorca Cohen, initiated proceedings against Kory, alleging misconduct in his capacity as trustee of their father's estate. However, a court-appointed referee issued a definitive ruling on March 23, affirming that Kory meticulously and proficiently managed the estate in accordance with Cohen's explicit directives. The referee's findings explicitly stated that Kory's financial disbursements were both accurate and justified, and that all actions challenged by the Cohen heirs were deemed reasonable, ethical, and conducted with the full knowledge and consent of Adam and Lorca Cohen. This verdict effectively dismisses all objections raised, which included scrutinizing minor expenses such as Uber charges, phone bills, and computer purchases, as well as more substantial issues like the sale of Cohen's music catalog.

The ruling further highlighted Adam Cohen's interference in the estate's affairs, particularly regarding the sale of his father's music catalog to Hipgnosis and the subsequent blockage of his father's archive sale. Kory's testimony during the trial revealed that Leonard Cohen himself had anticipated such potential family conflicts, reportedly comparing his son's potential actions to Hamlet's struggle with his father's legacy, and entrusting Kory with ultimate decision-making authority for the estate. This comprehensive exoneration not only vindicates Kory but also underscores the complexities that can arise in managing the legacies of iconic figures.

The resolution of this case reaffirms the importance of integrity and diligent stewardship in managing an artist's legacy. It serves as a powerful reminder that truth and justice ultimately prevail, highlighting the significance of ethical conduct and transparent practices in all professional dealings. This outcome ensures that Leonard Cohen's artistic and financial heritage is preserved and managed in a manner that honors his intentions and contributions to the world.
