Chinese Filmmaker Juno Hong Unveils 'Only the Moon Knows' at Shanghai Project Market

On June 15, 2026, Chinese director Juno Hong presented her first feature film, 'Only the Moon Knows,' at the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival's SIFF Project. This autobiographical work was selected as one of three international co-production initiatives showcased at the market. The film centers on Cheng Jun, a Chinese international student navigating the night shift at a 24-hour convenience store, who forms an unexpected friendship with an elderly homeless woman seeking refuge there. Their bond is tested as Cheng Jun prepares to return home, coinciding with a pivotal shift in the elderly woman's circumstances.

Drawing directly from Hong's experiences as a student and worker overseas, the project is a poignant reflection of her life. With the screenplay complete and a budget of RMB2 million ($296,000) established, 10% of the necessary financing has already been secured. Hong is now actively pursuing international co-producers and financial backers, particularly those interested in post-production collaboration and global distribution. She emphasizes that 'Only the Moon Knows' stands apart from her previous work, as it is a narrative born directly from her personal journey and vulnerabilities.

Although this marks her directorial debut, Hong brings extensive experience from her roles as a script supervisor and coordinator on various Chinese independent productions, including 'The Last Summer,' 'Fish,' and Zhao Hao's upcoming film, 'If I See A Rainbow.' Currently based in Beijing, she holds a graduate degree in Digital Image & Contents from Dongguk University in Korea.

Hong articulated her belief that a unique directorial voice emerges from absolute honesty regarding one's own vulnerabilities. She highlighted loneliness as a universal human experience, acknowledging its varied manifestations across cultures. By situating the story within an intercultural framework, the film aims to shed light on the initial isolation caused by linguistic and cultural barriers. Hong clarified that her intent is not to mimic stylistic conventions but to meticulously portray the authentic, subtle details of everyday life she personally observed.

Regarding her financing approach, Hong expressed a preference for partners who prioritize independent, cross-cultural cinema over purely commercial interests. She stated, "Our financing strategy heavily relies on international co-productions and cultural film funds. We seek partners who perceive this not merely as a commercial venture, but who deeply appreciate and champion the artistic merit inherent in independent, cross-cultural storytelling."

Juno Hong's 'Only the Moon Knows' serves as a compelling reminder of the power of personal narrative in filmmaking. Her commitment to authenticity and her exploration of universal themes like loneliness, particularly within a cross-cultural context, resonate deeply. This project underscores the importance of fostering international collaborations that value artistic integrity and unique perspectives, rather than solely commercial returns. It encourages filmmakers to embrace their vulnerabilities as a source of strength and originality, ultimately enriching the global cinematic landscape with diverse and heartfelt stories.
